How the Mull Lottery Money is Supporting Sport on Mull
Running a club on an island and maintaining the facilities is an expensive undertaking. At Mull Rugby Club we started the Mull Lottery to help us financially.
Local support for the lottery has been outstanding. Receiving the lottery income has supplied funds not just to help run the club but to expand club activities. The clubs now runs tag rugby teams, mini teams, junior teams, and a senior teams.
Against the national trend of a move away from taking part in sports Mull Rugby Club have more active participants than ever before. This is good news for all of us that are concerned about children spending much of their time in front of televisions and computers.
The lottery money is essential for maintaining the Garmony Playing Field. The playing fields are available for all sports - anyone who has attended the wonderful “Primary School Sports Day” will appreciate how important the Garmony facility is to all of Mull. However the work of the club does not stop there. Looking to the future Mull Rugby Club has invested £6,000 of Mull Lottery money towards employing a rugby development officer for Argyll and Bute. The Mull contribution has not been beaten by any other club in our area and is only matched by Oban!
Directly as a result of the above success we are in the process of approaching Sportscotland other grant giving bodies with a proposal to improve the facilities at Garmony.
This very wet winter has forcefully shown the need for an indoor sports hall. This indoor facility would be available for all. Good examples to benefit would be basketball and our very fine indoor athletics clubs. Garmony is the ideal situation as it is between our two ferry terminals. This will enable Mull teams to compete against visiting teams from all parts of Scotland.
Also having an indoor facility at Garmony would be a joy to all those who give their time to organise outdoor events. The option to move indoors would allow confident planning of sports days, training and much more (if the weather turns out to be bad just move indoors). Canceling well planned events is one of the most demoralizing tasks for voluntary organizers.
Mull Rugby Club is always working to improve participation in sports facilities on Mull. Please continue to support our efforts by purchasing Mull Lottery Tickets.
